Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston, has advised Otto Addo to stick to the three-back system against Nicaragua on Tuesday.
The Black Stars were completely dominated in the first half against Brazil on Friday. The Seleção scored three goals in the first 40 minutes with the Black Stars struggling to create any opening.
As a result, Otto Addo made a couple of personnel changes at half-time which saw Ghana switch from 4-1-4-1 to 3-4-1-2, helping the side gain a bit more control in the second half of the game.
Kingston, who was speaking on the Joy Sports Link on Saturday, believes Addo should use the three-back system in the subsequent games as it worked in the second half against Brazil.
"For me, I'll go with the lineup in the second half. The formation will be a back three. Looking at the squad and the type of players that we have now, I think we should stick to our back three but then again, we have to work on when we get the ball and we are trying to go forward. When we are on the ball, I don't see any shape of the team but off the ball I can that it's very clear that we are five at the back, two in the middle and three in front of them.”
Djiku and Amartey have been the preferred centre-back pairing since Addo took charge of the Black Stars and Kingston is confident the two are perfect for Ghana's defence.
"Looking at the back three at the moment, apart from Salisu, Wollacott, Djiku and Amartey, they've played together for some time now so I don't think there should be any problem with that at all. I can see the telepathy between the two centre-backs and the goalkeeper."
Laryea also urged Ghana to be confident in themselves and play the ball out from the back against Nicaragua and not be scared like they were against Brazil.
"Looking at the situation, Ghana didn’t have too much confidence in trying to play out from the back. They always skip the first pressing by going long so I did not see Wollacott being on the ball and trying to find the centre-backs like the Brazilians did with Silva and Marquinhos. For me, I think communication at the back isn't a problem at all because of the collaboration they've had before.
“Going forward, I believe we should be able to put the ball on the ground especially when we are on the ball, we should see the build-up phase, players picking right positions like the Brazilians did. They always push two centre-backs up, you can see them together, their holding midfielder is always staying in pocket space to try and link up with the two centre-backs. That's how come the Brazilians broke us (Ghana) so against Nicaragua we should be able to be very calm. Nicaragua is not at the same level with Brazil so we should be able to relax."
Ghana will play another pre-World Cup friendly against Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 26, 2022.
