The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC), has refuted reports about the planned withdrawal of the Ghana Institute of Journalism from the UNIMAC merger.
UNIMAC, a recently created public university, is a merger of three schools namely; the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL) and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).
Months after the merger, some media reports have indicated that Ghana Institute of Journalism is harbouring intentions of pulling out of the merger.
But speaking to JoyNews' Fostina Sarfo on the back of this development, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, who is the head of the institution stressed that the reports are false.
According to him, none of the three constituent schools can unitarily obstruct the merger.
"The idea that GIJ UTAG can threaten to pull out of the merger is a nonstarter. GIJ did not create the merger, NAFTI did not create the merger, GIL did not create the merger. We're a public institution, UNIMAC", he stressed.
"For any part of those in the merger to say you want to pull out, pull out and do what? … The best anyone who has serious concerns about this or doesn't want to be part of this merger can do is to resign", the Vice Chancellor added.
Touching on the newly created UNIMAC, he further indicated the rumours about GIJ's withdrawal is part of the regular challenges that accompany institutionial mergers.
He however emphasised that, the reported agitation will not derail UNIMAC from its mandate.
The full interview with Professor Kwansah-Aidoo will air on Joy Campus this Saturday, February 11 at 2:00pm with a repeat on Sunday at 11:00am on the JoyNews channel.
The Interim Council of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC), appointed Professor Kwame Kwansah-Aidoo as the Vice-Chancellor on December 1, 2022.
His appointment came after the 6th Regular Meeting of the Council of the University held on November 30, 2022.
Until his appointment, Professor Kwansah-Aidoo was the Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
He is also currently the Chairman of Vice Chancellors Ghana.
