The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research has revealed in their latest report on teenage pregnancies in Ghana that about 10.6% of all teenage girls got pregnant in 2022 as recorded by the percentage of adolescents attending antenatal care.
This statistic is marginally lower than the 2021 figure of 11.1%. Meanwhile, the average rate of pregnancy among teenage girls spanning 2018 to 2022 is 11.26%.
These pregnancies were reported to be high in marginalized communities especially in the North East Region with the highest rate of 15% followed by the Upper East region with a rate of 14.2%.
According to the Ghana Health Service data, 102,673 teenagers were reported pregnant in 2022 alone. This number is slightly lower than the three-year average of 107,373 for 2021, 2022 and 2023. The total for the three years is 322,121.
The data also shows that abortions among teenagers totaled 24,108 for the years 2020 (8,026), 2021 (8,465) and 2022 (7,617).
