An interview British actor Idris Elba granted Kumasi-based Opemsuo FM has re-ignited the discussion on Africans telling their own stories.
Idris said in the interview that “African stories have always been told outside of Africa. It is important that we start telling our stories inside of Africa, from Africans.”
As a powerful art form, film making is a tool that shapes minds and moulds societies. Unfortunately, African film makers have largely been criticised for not mirroring the real people of the continent, their lifestyles, ethos, orientations and narratives that will influence their general well-being.
Joy Entertainment’s Twitter Spaces conversation on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 20:00 GMT, will be hosted on Joy FM’s Twitter handle @joy997fm.
A panel of film aficionados from Ghana and other parts of Africa, will discuss how well African film makers have told the African story.
They will seek to conceptualise what an African story is, and to find out ways of telling African stories that will shape the continent in all spheres of life.
The speakers are Peter Sedufia (Ghanaian film maker), Kwezi Patrick (host of Cinema Blitz on NBS TV, Uganda), Chief Moomen (Ghanaian playwright), Tony Asankomah (film critic, ghmoviefreak.com) and (Omowonuola Giwa, Nigerian Scriptwriter/Producer).
‘Joy Entertainment Unpacked’ is a series of Twitter Spaces conversations hosted by Kwame Dadzie.
This discussion is powered by Joy Entertainment.
