The Vice Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee in Parliament and Sefwi Akontombra MP, Djornobuah Alex Tetteh says members have not been formally informed about the government’s decision to reintroduce road tolls.
Like every other person, he said members of the Committee woke up to see the news on social media.
The Vice Chairman who spoke to Roselyn Felli on Prime Morning indicated that the Speaker of Parliament is yet to present a correspondence from the Roads and Highways Ministry.
"As the Vice Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, we have not received any reference from the Speaker of Parliament. We normally take instructions from the speaker's reference. We all saw what the Finance Ministry posted on social media, but we have not received any such letters," he said on Thursday.
Until that is done, the Committee, will be unable to debate the decision and present it to Parliament for approval.
Under the 2023 Budget, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta hinted at the reintroduction of road toll on selected roads in the country to help generate more revenue.
On March 14, the government, through the Finance Ministry, published approved rates for the reintroduction of road toll on all roads in the country.
However, Mr. Alex Tetteh said the decision is not from Parliament as the Committee has not presented any proposal for approval.
He said, "once it has been mentioned in the budget, if there’s a document and they bring it, we will actually work on it."
He also mentioned that both the Majority and Minority in Parliament have agreed to the decision for the road toll to be reintroduced.
He believes revenues accumulated from road toll collection are not sufficient to solve the country’s road problems.
For this reason, he opined that the government should find other means of generating revenue to support the construction of roads.
