Economist Kwame Pianim has urged government to make the same sacrifices that it wants Ghanaians to make.
In an interview on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, he proposed for government to heed calls to cut its expenditure.
This, he explains is because the country has a huge size as compared to US, UK and Germany.
His comments follow the passage of three revenue measures in Akufo-Addo's government bid to secure an IMF bailout and improve the country's economic conditions.
Lamenting over the passage of the bills, Mr Piani further questioned what the GH¢4 million revenue generated from the taxes would be channelled into.
“The monies you are collecting, are you going to put it aside to cure cancer or it goes into the Consolidated Fund for you to spend on your projects?
“Look the government should say that in the next two years, we are not going to make any projects, we are all in this together.
“They should also make sacrifices like Ghanaians are making sacrifices,” he said.
According to him, government projects usually cost double the price indicated because of their incompetence and “corruption.”
As a result, the expert does not want any country to forgive Ghana of its debt but rather structure it in a way that compels it to pay. This, he said would deter the government from engaging in reckless borrowing.
“As far as I am concerned nobody should give us any debt forsaken; they should restructure it; we should pay so that next time somebody is borrowing like there is no tomorrow, we will tell them to stop borrowing because you have to pay,” he said.
He recommends that the government focus on creating home-grown solutions to solve current economic issues rather than finding itself at the feet of the IMF during an economic crisis.
