The Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has voiced concerns  regarding the impact of partisan politics in Ghana's local governance.
According to him, there is the need for more decentralisation and less political interference within communities.
“Our politics have become so divisive and discriminatory,” Mr. Vanderpuye said on Citi TV.
Mr. Vanderpuye noted that this division also influences communal work, as residents frequently declined to participate if the organiser is from a different political party.
He held the Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Information responsible for this disconnection due to their neglect of local elections.
“We have an EC that conducts presidential and parliamentary elections and then goes to sleep. One year six months down the line, before they come from their slumber and remember that we have an assembly election to do. They finish with the assembly elections; they will go to sleep again. Six months to presidential and parliamentary elections before they intensify their activities”.
The Member of Parliament stressed that, “Their work is to conduct elections, so the process, all the processes leading up to the conduct of elections in this country must be done and done well so that we don’t have the sort of absolute negligence we had in this district level elections”.
Mr. Vanderpuye pointed out that the Information Service Department didn’t adequately promote the district-level elections, causing low voter turnout and reduced engagement.
