The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has announced that a future NDC government will conduct an inquiry into the conflict that ensued between residents of Krobo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which resulted in the tragic death of a young man and left several others injured.
This decision follows the 2022 standoff between residents of Manya Krobo and the ECG, leading to the disconnection of electricity supply to the area for some time. The incident resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, while some irate youth of the area also vandalised property of the power distributor.
Speaking to transport union operators and traders at Agormenya in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency in the Eastern region, Mr. Mahama expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the issue.
He pledged to investigate the matter thoroughly, take disciplinary actions against those responsible, and provide compensation to the affected families.
Mr. Mahama recounted that the NDC had previously appealed to the ruling New Patriotic Party to compensate the victims and their families, but the request was ignored, leaving the affected individuals in distress.
Additionally, Mr. Mahama affirmed his unchanged stance on the commercialisation of okada (motorcycle taxi) operations, emphasising that he plans to license and regulate their activities if elected into office.
“I want to remind you all that my promise for Okada riders hasn’t changed. We would license and regulate Okada riding because no government can collapse the okada business. So we have to register them to indicate that these people are the okada riders and direct them on how to operate.”
