North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has criticised President Akufo-Addo's claim that his recent visit to victims of the Akosombo Dam induced floods at Mepe in the Volta Region, was because he was enjoined by the Constitution to do so.
According to the President, the people of the area do not vote for the New Patriotic Party already so votes could not have motivated his visit.
However, Mr. Ablakwa while speaking on JoyNews on Valentine’s Day, February 14, called on the government to fulfil its obligations to the victims, emphasising that the president's presence to commiserate with them should not be determined solely by electoral considerations, especially in areas where he may not have received significant votes.
He urged the president to prioritise national interests and provide support and assistance to all communities affected by natural disasters like floods, regardless of political affiliations.
“As MP executing this mandate, you know I did not get 100%. It is not really possible. I do not know of any politician who has gotten 100%, but carrying out all these interventions, whether it is a scholarship provided, whether it is rent for 167 teachers, whether it is the renovation, whether it is the school bus or school shoes.
“We are not asking anybody for party cards. We do not care who votes for us; that is what it should be.”
He emphasised that while some efforts have been made, there are still many residents living in tents, highlighting the urgent need for further assistance and support from the authorities.
“About 2,500 people are living in tents. If you look at those living in Agbetipo, those at Bator DA, those at Adidome, and those in Fojoku, if you put all of this together, you are talking about 2,500 people; they have to be resettled.”
