It was an interesting turn of events in Parliament on Thursday, February 22, after Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu resigned from his role.
The previous day had been filled with rumours of his possible resignation, contrasted sharply by the emphatic debunking of the rumour by Joseph Osei-Owusu, First Deputy Speaker.
This is why the atmosphere in the Chamber, a day after his resignation, was mixed.
On Thursday, February 22, scores of legislators were seated for the day's business when Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu walked in.
The Suame MP, who usually occupies a seat on the front row due to his leadership role, did not take that seat. This time, he opted for the first seat on the second row.
Before taking his seat, the Suame MP waved to his colleagues on the floor of Parliament. Throughout the session, he could be seen with his phone intermittently.
Meanwhile, in the front row was Habib Iddrisu previously the Second Deputy Majority Whip was spotted seated in the Majority Chief Whip’s seat, while Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra, occupied the position of Deputy Chief Whip. Both the Majority Leader and Deputy Majority Leader’s seats were unoccupied.
After Parliamentary proceedings, JoyNews reporter Kwaku Asante followed Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and asked him; "Leader, why didn’t you take your usual seat? You chose another seat instead?"
Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had a smirk on his face, suggesting this was an anticipated question.
However, he remained quiet. Kwaku Asante persisted, and followed him to his car. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu paused, turned towards the journalist and remarked; "I will speak to you tomorrow," and without further ado, he was whisked away in his vehicle.
