Ghana’s hopes of claiming a medal in tennis, once again rests on the shoulders of the men’s doubles team, after day 3 saw an end to the country’s campaign in the singles event.
All three Ghanaians in the men’s singles round of 16 crashed out, leaving the men’s doubles team of Abraham Asaba and Isaac Nortey, as the only remaining Ghanaians in the competition.
Youngster, Lameck Bagerbaseh, suffered a straight sets loss to Tunisia’s Dougaz Mohamed Aziz, while Ghana’s number one, Abraham Asaba, also lost in straight sets (6-3 6-4), to Zimbabwean Courtney Lock.
Asaba and Nortey, however teamed up in the men’s doubles to beat their Burkinabe opponents Kalaga Sayouba and Joel Kowere, 6-4 6-1 in the round of 16.
Asaba and Nortey are now just a win away from guaranteeing a medal, and will have to beat powerhouse, Egypt, in the quarterfinals to do so.
