The use of drugs is one big problem bedeviling the creative industry. A lot of creatives the world over have lost their sanity and their livelihood through drugs. What goads them into the act has been of great concern to most lovers of the arts and stakeholders.
In 'Creative Addictions', some creatives open up on how they found themselves in such a noose and the effects it has had on them.
According to broadcaster Noah King, he started using drugs before he got into the media space. However, he says the situation got worse when he traveled with some musicians for a concert in Tamale. That was when he was introduced to more dangerous drugs.
Satirist Kwaku Sintim Misa popularly known as KSM, notes that the biggest push for drug use among talents in the creative industry is the ability of the drugs to evoke wild creative ideas.
"They tell you that drugs will enlarge your creative horizon. There are so many things that you can create and do that under normal circumstances you will not be able to; and surprisingly there is some truth to it," he says.
For the late Lynx Entertainment signee OJ Blaq who got trapped in the act when he was young, drugs later robbed him off his happiness and put him in unpleasant situations.
Nasty, a former member of the Lifeline Family music group, discloses that his relationship with drugs was birthed during his time in Adisadel College. Little did he know that what made him ‘high’ for a moment would ruin his life forever.
Apostle Daniel Cobby Washington, the Chief Executive Officer of Chosen Rehab Centre, also reveals that a lot of the people who are brought to his facility for treatment are those who have artistic capabilities, a reason he decided to build a music studio at the premises.
For those who find themselves in this situation, all hope is not lost. Dr. Julius Xatse – psychiatrist and clinical coordinator of the Pantang Hospital suggests ways to help people get out of drug use and its addiction. He indicates that the healing process starts with the person.
"It is easier if you have the person you are dealing with appreciating the fact that they have a problem that needs to be treated for that matter," he says.
Watch out for the documentary 'Creative Addictions' on Tuesday April 2, 2024 on Joy News' AM Show, and on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM. On Wednesday, it will air on Prime Morning on Hoy Prime television.
