The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), a crucial referral centre serving five regions in northern Ghana, is currently grappling with an oxygen supply disruption due to technical issues.
This setback arose after the hospital's oxygen plant encountered engine damage on Monday, July 1, 2024, significantly limiting the facility's ability to provide essential oxygen to patients.
Mr. Zuberu Alidu, the hospital's Public Relations Officer, confirmed the situation to Citi News, stating that a team of technical experts is actively working to address the problem.
However, no specific timeline has been provided for when the issue will be resolved, adding to concerns over the hospital's capability to meet the oxygen needs of its patients during this period.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Alidu sought to reassure the public that measures are in place to manage the situation effectively.
He emphasised that there is no immediate cause for alarm and that efforts are ongoing to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
“One of the components, a very important component of the oxygen plant got burnt and because of that the plant is not able to produce and supply. What we are doing now is to liaise with suppliers mostly in Kumasi because our suppliers within the Northern region, we are told that they aren’t able to give us oxygen.”
“For now, we have what we need. Besides this, we are also in touch with the facilities referring to us, especially with Ghana Health Service such that the referral that will come, we’ll have what it takes to receive them," he said.
