Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana, Godfred Bokpin says flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) election campaign, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia needs a debate with opposition candidate John Mahama more than Mahama needs it.
According to him, it will do more good than harm to his election bid.
Prof Bokpin made these comments on Newsfile on Saturday.
"They know what they are doing. They look at it from a more strategic fit," Bokpin said, referencing the campaign strategies of the NPP.
"They have strategists, they do all the analysis, the back office, they feed the flagbearer and all of that. So, if you see Dr Bawumia calling for it, he needs it more," Prof Bokpin said.
His remarks come amid growing calls from the Bawumia camp for a debate between the two leading presidential candidates ahead of the upcoming elections.
Prof Bopkin sees the debate as a crucial platform for both candidates to outline their policies and address key national issues.
His analysis suggests that the NPP's campaign team is keenly aware of the strategic benefits that a debate could offer Dr Bawumia.
Already, key NDC members including MPs have turned down the calls for now and rather urged Dr Bawumia to meet the press first before considering a conversation with John Mahama.
