Economist and Political Risk Analyst, Dr Theo Acheampong, has commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the initiative to develop a youth-focused manifesto.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 17, Dr Acheampong emphasised the importance of dedicating specific attention to youth-related challenges within the political system, particularly given the country’s demographic realities.
“For me, the idea of a youth manifesto by the NDC, specifically addressing the issues related to youth, is good and welcoming,” Dr Acheampong stated.
He highlighted the relevance of such a focus, citing data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census which reveals that 80% of Ghana’s population is below the age of 40.
“This statistic underscores the critical need for targeted policies that address the unique challenges faced by this demographic,” he told Samsom Lardy Anyenini.
“With such a large proportion of the population being youthful, there are major issues to address and major issues to tackle.”
Dr Acheampong urged other political parties to follow suit, suggesting that all parties should ensure their manifestos, whether as part of the main document or in a separate youth-focused publication, comprehensively address issues related to youth and unemployment.
“For me, that is commendable,” he stated.
The NDC flagbearer, John Mahama on Monday launched the party’s Youth Manifesto.
Some notable promises that were made include the abolishment of the 10% tax on sports betting winnings and the proposal to ensure that first-year tertiary students do not pay academic fees should NDC win the upcoming election.
