The flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has attributed the sub-standard condition of Ghana's stadiums to corruption under the current government.
His comments come after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to search for an alternative venue for Ghana's next home game.
Following the directive, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has closed down three major stadiums including the Baba Yara Stadium, Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Stadium for maintenance purposes.
"For the first time in our history, CAF says we don't have any stadium where we can play international matches, so we have to play our games in other countries," Mahama said during his campaign ahead of the December 7 elections.
"It was only recently the government handed out big contracts to companies to renovate the stadiums so what happened?" he quizzed.
"Everybody is tired of the corruption scandals. People are tired of it so journalists don't talk about it anymore."
Recently, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that the government has spent over GHS85 million on stadium maintenance over the last five years with nothing to show for it.
He further alleged that more than a third of the payments were made to a company owned by Kelvin Ofori-Atta, a relative of President Akufo-Addo and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
