Isaac Wilberforce Mensah, the Spokesperson for the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame on Thursday, September 10, accepted a petition from the #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamsey protesters on behalf of the Attorney General at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The protesters are not only calling for the release of their 53 colleagues from the previous demonstration but also raising awareness about the environmental and health crises caused by illegal mining (galamsey).
The 3-day demonstration is organized to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey) and to advocate for the release of the detained protesters.

Mr Mensah, who received the petition assured the crowd that the Attorney General would act on the petition.
According to him, the AG's office was working assiduously in dealing with illegal mining cases to ensure that all culprits were brought to book.
JoyNews’ Kenneth Gyasi, who covered the protest, said Mr Mensah conveyed that, during the protesters' next court appearance, the AG’s office will look at the issues on a case-by-case basis and may not oppose a bail application where necessary.
He however noted that any decision to discontinue the case against the protestors or otherwise can only be taken or addressed by the Attorney General himself.

Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, in a separate interview on Joy FM's Top Story, said while the AG might not oppose bail for the suspects, the ultimate decision resides with the court.
“You can even go to court and say you are not opposed to it but the judge would have to make a determination.”
