The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has named Rabat the “World Book Capital” for 2026.
This is in recognition of Morocco’s dedication to promoting culture and democratising knowledge, in line with the High Royal Guidelines of HM King Mohammed VI.
Rabat, known as the “City of Lights” and Morocco’s cultural capital, will now add the title of World Book Capital to its list of global and regional accolades, according to a press release by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Communication.
The ministry stated that this nomination provides a valuable opportunity to raise collective awareness about the importance of books and reading.
The initiative will foster synergy between public institutions and civil society to build an inclusive reading culture, particularly among young people.
The ministry described the choice as a strategic opportunity to highlight Morocco’s rich cultural heritage and organise innovative events that promote intercultural dialogue through the universal language of books.
Throughout the year, Moroccan literature will be showcased in various forms, including writing, workshops, debates, training courses, and book fairs.
Permanent projects, such as new creative spaces, will also be implemented to solidify Rabat’s role as a capital of books and reading.
With a rich and diverse program, Rabat’s designation as World Book Capital will strengthen the role of books in the cultural and creative industries, while promoting reading as a key element of the success of Morocco’s New Development Model.
The program will also celebrate the nation’s cultural diversity, the ministry concluded.
