In the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 elections, IMANI’s PULSE Episode 11 provides intriguing insights into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign performance on social media.
Analysing over 20,000 posts from August to October 10, 2024, the report paints a largely optimistic picture for the NDC.
The NDC recorded a significant 72% positive sentiment for both the party and Mahama’s campaign activities.
As Mahama focuses on economic recovery and a “24-hour economy” policy, these promises have resonated well with online audiences.
About 70% of discussions surrounding his promises were positive, with only 30% showing negative reactions.
IMANI’s emotional analysis, which adds context to public sentiments, revealed that 41% of the comments reflected admiration, while neutral emotions accounted for 36%.
Despite some criticisms, only 18% of mentions expressed disgust or anger, reflecting a largely favourable public reception.
Mahama’s call for change is the centrepiece of his campaign, and online sentiments reflect overwhelming support, with 82% of discussions related to this theme being positive.
Religious endorsements, promises of swift economic reforms, and youth-centric policies have contributed to his growing online presence.
However, Mahama has faced backlash for avoiding presidential debates, and his infrastructure record remains a contentious topic, drawing negative responses.
