Flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has backed calls for a forensic audit of the voters’ register, stressing that the credibility of elections relies on the integrity of the register.
Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk with Fostina Sarfo, he acknowledged the efforts of the Electoral Commission (EC) but highlighted the need to address irregularities.
“The technical integrity and credibility of any election start with the voters’ register,” he said.
“Whether it’s internal party elections or national elections, that’s the foundation.”
His comments follow concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which called for an independent forensic audit after detecting anomalies during a voter exhibition exercise.
The NDC argues that these irregularities could compromise the credibility of the upcoming general elections.
While commending the EC’s efforts, Kyerematen emphasized the importance of addressing these concerns.
“To ensure election integrity, the EC must respond to the specific cases identified,” he stated, adding that this would “enhance the commission’s credibility.”
When asked if he supported an independent audit, Mr Kyerematen was clear.
“Yes, it has to be done. I don’t see why there should be resistance to it,” he remarked.
“If there are lingering doubts about the register, a comprehensive audit will help improve public trust in its credibility.”
Mr Kyerematen’s position echoes growing calls from various political actors seeking greater transparency in the electoral process.
As the 2024 elections approach, how the EC responds to these demands will be key in maintaining public trust.
