The Old Tafo Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has intensified voter education in the Municipality with barely a month to the 2024 general elections.
Officials of the Commission have been engaging faith-based organisations with messages on peace, tolerance and civic responsibilities and the goal was to sensitise citizens on the role they could play in ensuring a peaceful election in December.
Led by the Municipal Director of NCCE, Suraka Saani, the Commission emphasised the need for Ghanaians to jealously protect the country’s international reputation as one of the few countries in the West African sub-region that had enjoyed stability in the last three decades.
Ensuring a peaceful election, according to Mr Suraka, is a civic responsibility of every Ghanaian, and charged the religious groups to lead the campaign for a violent-free election.
As the moral voices of society, Christians and Muslims have key roles to play in fostering peace before, during, and after the elections, he pointed out.
The Municipal Director entreated citizens to refrain from any form of malpractice that could compromise the electoral processes, saying that the collective interest of the nation must always override the quest for personal gains.
“Let us refrain from the use of money as a political tool, spreading misinformation or disinformation, perpetrating electoral violence, and resorting to inflammatory campaign rhetoric as the election approaches,” he advised.
The NCCE uses its interactions with the people to educate them on the voting processes at the polling station, especially how to handle the ballot papers in order not to spoil their ballots.
The sensitisation served as a pivotal step towards empowering the community to actively participate in the upcoming elections while upholding essential democratic values and principles.
