The race gets heated as two women including the incumbent Member of Parliament, (MP) Mrs Linda Akweley Ocloo, get set to wrestle for the Shai Osudoku Constituency parliamentary seat in the upcoming general elections.
The two, Gifty Dede Koliyoo Hammond, an independent candidate and Linda Akweley Ocloo are contesting with Mr Benjamin Nargeh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for his second attempt after he lost in 2020.
The independent candidate, a Gospel singer and native of Agomeda, has entered the race with a bold promise to rescue the constituency from what she described as being an abandoned and deplorable state and appealed to the electorate to vote massively for her.
She comes with experience in community development and advocacy, focusing on education, healthcare and economic empowerment, while emphasising job creation for the youth and women’s empowerment as her campaign messages to woo the electorates.
Mrs Ocloo, the incumbent, who has represented the constituency in parliament since 2016, entered politics to replace her husband who was the 2016 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but died in a tragic motor accident, has since, maintained a strong electoral presence in the area.
Prior to taking up the NDC parliamentary candidature for the constituency, Mrs Ocloo worked as an economist and Client Services Consultant at Old Mutual Assurance and holds a Business Administration degree from the University of Cape Coast and a diploma in Banking and Insurance.
In 2016, she secured 20,114 votes (67.07 per cent) of the total valid votes cast and increased significantly to 34,555 votes in the Election 2020, to seal her bid for a second time.
From 1996, the NDC has won both the presidential and parliamentary elections and represented the constituency in Ghana’s parliament, indicating the constituency as one of the strongholds of the NDC in the Greater Accra Region.
