The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Director of Elections and IT, Edward Omane Boamah, has called out the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to recruit Constituency Collation Officers, describing the move as illegal.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, November 9, 2024, Omane Boamah stated that the NDC had already voiced strong objections to this recruitment at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings.
According to Dr Omane Boamah, current laws mandate Constituency Returning Officers to handle the collation of election results, making the EC’s move to bring in Constituency Collation Officers both unnecessary and in conflict with established procedures.
He emphasised that the EC must adhere strictly to the existing legal framework, which does not accommodate these additional officers at the constituency level.
Furthermore, Dr Omane Boamah questioned whether the EC also intends to recruit Regional Collation Officers, a step he suggested would further complicate and potentially undermine the integrity of the results collation process.
He called on the EC to clarify its intentions publicly, stressing that the transparency of the electoral process is critical to maintaining public trust.
The NDC Director urged the EC to abandon what he described as an “illegal” recruitment drive and adhere to established electoral laws.
"Folks, you know this Electoral Commission is crooked and criminally minded when they tell you providing voter register statistics is not mandated by Law, C.I.127."
"And it's taking the Commission more than three (3) days to generate the voter statistics from a register they've already released to the public/parties."
"Yet they're out there recruiting Constituency Collation Officers. I put it to Jean Mensah and the Electoral Commission Ghana that Constituency Collation Officers are also not stipulated by Law."
