Ghana’s political landscape witnessed a notable shift as John Dumelo, a famed actor and politician, claimed victory as the new Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency under the umbrella National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an exclusive interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Dumelo opened up about his successful campaign, expressing confidence in the electorate's support. Dumelo reflected on his opponent’s moves during the election by sharing rice, oil, money and whispering to voters in queue to exercise their franchise.
“It was at that point I knew she's lost the election from onset. If you know you’ve worked, if you know you’ve been a good MP, whatever, and deserve another term, why are you sharing food and money and rice and oil, and of course clearly it backfired,” in reference to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate on her tactics to win the election.
Dumelo’s comments highlight not only his campaign's strategy and the engagement with grassroots supporters but also cast a spotlight on the contentious tactics sometimes employed in Ghanaian politics.
As he prepares to assume his new role in parliament, Dumelo emphasised his commitment to serving the constituents of Ayawaso West, and not to repeat the previous mistakes made in the past by other MP’s.
“I don’t want to be the Kind of MP that will disappear and election time I’ll come around sharing rice,” he stated.
This election serves as a significant transition from the entertainment industry to politics introducing a new perspective to the political scene.
