The Diplomatic Corps in Ghana has applauded Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, for the peaceful and dignified manner he conducted himself before, during and after the December 7, 2024, general elections. 

Maher Kheir, Dean of the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, said, “It’s a great honour to commend a man whose actions continue to highlight the strength of Ghana's democratic principles.” 

He made the remarks during a courtesy call on Vice President Bawumia, who was also the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Ghana’s Election 2024, at the Jubilee House, Accra, on Monday. 

Vice President Bawumia, based on the results then so far collated by his party, conceded defeat to President-elect John Mahama, before the declaration by the Electoral Commissioner of Mr. Mahama as the winner and president-elect. 

Mr. Kheir, also the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, lauded the NPP Flagbearer for his unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, especially through his honourable concession in the just-ended elections, which stood out as a testament to his statesmanship and love for the nation. 

He said: "In moments of political transition, it is the strength of character and respect for the democratic process that defines a leader. 

"Your grace in accepting the outcome of the elections is not only a reflection of your integrity but also a profound contribution to Ghana's enviable democratic credentials, which serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration across the continent."  

Mr. Kheir observed that the peaceful and dignified manner Dr Bawumia conducted himself during the electioneering underscored the maturity of Ghana's democracy and the shared responsibility of all leaders to uphold the ideals of peace, unity, and progress for the nation. 

Mr. Kheir said: "Your actions reaffirm the confidence and trust the international community has in Ghana, as a model for democratic governance. 

"As the Diplomatic Corps, we applaud your example and encourage all stakeholders to continue strengthening this legacy.

"Let's celebrate Ghana's democracy not just as a system but as a shared commitment to values that uplift its people and inspire others. Thank you for your exemplary leadership; I wish you success as you contribute to the development of this great nation." 

In his response, Vice President Bawumia explained why he chose to give an early concession speech, noting that the NPP, through its internal collation mechanism, knew at midnight of December 8, 2024, that the election had been lost. 

Therefore, waiting for EC to go through days of putting together their documents would lead to days of unnecessary tensions and potential disturbances and violence. 

Thus, he chose to concede early to preserve Ghana's peace, Dr Bawumia explained. 

Dr Bawumia indicated that he was also concerned about the economic impact of any disturbances, especially as the country was gradually recovering from the various global economic challenges. 

Moreover, he was concerned about the security implications for the Sub-region if any violence/conflict should break out in Ghana, which would enable terrorists to take advantage to cause anarchy, hence his early concession on Sunday, December 8, before the EC made the official declaration.
