The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has firmly assured Ghanaians that President Mahama has no intention of cancelling the Free SHS policy.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on 20 January, Mr Iddrisu stressed that, far from discontinuing the initiative, President Mahama plans to expand it.
This includes extending the programme to private schools, ensuring the policy’s continued growth and wider reach.
Mr Iddrisu further emphasised that President Mahama is dedicated to the educational goals outlined in Act 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Act 38, which are fundamental to the country’s educational framework.
To support these objectives, Mahama intends to allocate 2 million cedis to further strengthen the education sector , he said.
While the Free SHS programme will remain in place, Mr Iddrisu made it clear that it will undergo a comprehensive review.
A national stakeholder forum will be convened to discuss the future of education in Ghana, with a focus on securing sustainable and reliable funding for the Free SHS initiative.
"This forum will play a crucial role in ensuring the programme’s long-term financial stability, allowing it to continue benefiting future generations of students across the country" he concluded.
Haruna has since been confirmed as the minister after parliament approved his nomination.
