Mahama Ayariga, the newly appointed Majority Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus, has pledged to uphold the legacies of his predecessors whilst leading Parliament.
Mr Ayariga succeeds Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who has assumed the role of Finance Minister.
Emphasising continuity in leadership, Ayariga remarked, "I am guided by the illustrious precedents set by former distinguished leaders of our caucus, including our current Speaker, Rt Alban Bagbin, who led us twenty years ago, followed by Cletus Avoka, Benjamin Kunbuor, Haruna Iddrisu, and most recently, Cassiel Ato Forson."
Ayariga reaffirmed the NDC's commitment to President John Dramani Mahama's national agenda, stating, "As Leader of the House and Leader of Government Business, I assure the people of Ghana that we will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana, consistent with the overwhelming mandate given to President Mahama and the 187 members of this caucus."
He also pledged to adopt a collaborative approach to governance, promising, "Although we constitute an overwhelming majority, we will strive for inclusivity and consensus-building, upholding the principles of probity and accountability in fulfilling the dreams of our founding fathers. We will foster national unity, advance democracy, and ensure equitable development."
Despite acknowledging potential challenges ahead, Ayariga expressed optimism, saying, "The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident that, together, through constructive dialogue and mutual respect, we can overcome any obstacles and deliver on our collective vision" ¹.
