Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has proposed the establishment of permanent constituency offices to enhance MPs’ engagement with their constituents.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Opoku highlighted the absence of structured platforms for interaction, which he believes contributes to a disconnect between MPs and the communities they serve.
“Constituency offices will provide MPs with a formal space to address concerns, communicate their achievements, and foster stronger relationships with their constituents,” he stated.
Mr. Opoku suggested that efforts to create constituency offices nationwide should be revived.
In the interim, he proposed leasing private office spaces or utilising existing facilities within Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that these offices are adequately equipped with logistical support and professional staff, to improve the quality of service delivery.
“This initiative will allow MPs to focus more on their legislative duties, rather than feeling pressured to deliver development projects, which often fall outside of their mandated responsibilities,” he added.
The MP’s proposal aims to reduce the burden on MPs to provide infrastructure and development projects for their constituencies, an issue which has long been a point of contention between lawmakers and their voters.
He believes that by establishing well-equipped constituency offices, MPs will be better positioned to serve the needs of their constituents while remaining focused on their primary role in the legislature.
