A recent report by Afrobarometer has revealed that approximately 78% of educated Ghanaians wish to leave the country in search of work opportunities and other reasons.
According to the report, “Thoughts of emigrating are most common among the most educated citizens (78% of those with post-secondary education).”

The report also highlights that young people, particularly those aged 18 to 35, represent 72% of those considering migration.
The main reasons for wanting to migrate are the search for work opportunities, followed by economic hardship and the desire for tourism experiences.

Regarding preferred destinations, North America is the most popular choice, followed by Europe and Central or South America.

The report further notes that men are the group most likely to express a desire to migrate, with a preference for living in urban areas.
Generally, the report says at least six out of ten Ghanaians have expressed a desire to travel abroad in search of better opportunities.
According to the 2024 Afrobarometer report, these individuals have considered leaving the country, primarily to improve their economic circumstances.
The report highlights that the proportion of citizens who have given “a lot” of thought to emigrating has more than doubled since 2017.
