Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the Minority Caucus’s opposition to the nomination of Sam George as Minister for Communications.
The caucus cited concerns over his past language in criticising former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that Sam George’s previous remarks about these high-ranking figures were unbecoming of a ministerial nominee.
The Minority also insisted that Mr George was unable to provide documentation to support claims regarding sources of income among other factors.
On this score, Mr Afenyo-Markin raised questions about his suitability for the role.
NDC MP, Kwame Governs Agbodza disagreed with this stance.
"Sam George is not the owner of his wife... If your wife owns a business, you need her permission to be able to give details of that business. So the idea that when you're being vetted, you can be vetted on everything including personal things," he responded.
Sam George's approval will be decided by a majority decision.
The vetting of Sam George last week appeared grueling as this development adds another layer to the already heated ministerial approval process.
Despite this opposition, Sam George and all other ministerial nominees are expected to be approved by consensus. The nominees include:
Dr. Rashid Pelpuo – Minister for Employment
Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Science and Technology
Samuel Nartey George – Minister for Communications
Kofi Adams – Minister for Sports
Joseph Bukari Nikpe – Minister for Transport
