Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has reiterated the need for an economic reset, stating that Ghana’s economy has not performed well over the past eight years.
Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 22, he explained that the country requires a fundamental shift in economic management to address persistent challenges.
"Unfortunately, in the last eight years, our economy hasn’t been that good. Hence, the need to reset Ghana in all aspects of the economy," he stated.
His remarks prompted a request for clarification from the Ranking member of the committee, Alexander Afenyo-Markin who asked whether Mr Dumelo's assessment factored in global economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and other external disruptions.
He noted that during the COVID-19 crisis, governments worldwide had to continue paying public sector workers despite lockdowns and economic standstills.
In response, Mr Dumelo pointed to admissions by the previous administration acknowledging the economic struggles.
"If you listen to some of the comments made by the past administration, they confirmed and confessed that the economy was bad. I am simply reiterating what they said to highlight the need for the NDC to reset Ghana in the right direction," he explained.
