President John Mahama has shared a candid moment from the aftermath of the 2024 general elections.
He revealed that he was fast asleep when then-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called to concede defeat and congratulate him on his victory.
His remarks shed light on the significance of the call, which was widely regarded as a display of political maturity and respect for democratic principles.
Speaking to members of the clergy in Kumasi on Sunday, 2nd March 2025, President Mahama recounted the sequence of events, explaining that the call came within 48 hours after the polls had closed.
He admitted that he had not anticipated such a swift concession, as he expected the country to still be awaiting official results from the Electoral Commission days after voting.
According to him, he was woken up by his aides, who informed him that he had an important call. Confused by the urgency, he asked who wanted to speak to him, only to be told that it was his "brother," the Vice President.
Wanting to be fully alert for the conversation, he quickly freshened up before taking the call.
Detailing their exchange, President Mahama said Dr Bawumia displayed statesmanship and humility in his words.
The former Vice President acknowledged that they had both embarked on a noble political journey and, based on the election results, Mahama had emerged victorious.
Dr Bawumia's decision to concede without delay was praised by many as a step towards strengthening Ghana’s democracy.
