Renowned hydrologist Dr. Anthony Twumasi has urged the government to address the country’s water crisis with the same level of commitment and urgency as the ongoing battle against illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Monday, March 24, Dr. Twumasi expressed grave concern about the increasing difficulty many urban areas in Ghana are facing in accessing clean, potable water.
Dr. Twumasi highlighted that, while the government has made strides in tackling the issue of galamsey, the water scarcity issue requires an equally aggressive and comprehensive strategy.
"I think that just as the government is confronting illegal mining, in the same way it is striving to address this challenge, we must put the same emphasis on this issue (the water crisis)," he said.
He added, "Some of the issues that confront Ghana Water Company Limited should be seen as national issues, and what we must do immediately is address them as they ought to be addressed."
He stressed that the government should prioritise the protection of the country’s water bodies and ensure the sustainable management of water resources to prevent further depletion and contamination.
In recent times, cities across the country have witnessed significant water shortages, leading to widespread challenges for residents who rely on the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for their daily water needs.
The limited supply of water, especially during peak periods, has exacerbated the already difficult conditions for many communities.
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has acknowledged the challenges in water supply but attributed the shortfall to a variety of factors, including galamsey activities, increased demand, environmental degradation, and limited infrastructure.
