Former Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), describing it as a disturbing display of lawlessness.
The incident, which occurred on April 8, has sparked widespread public backlash, with many questioning the legality and motives behind the move.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile programme on Saturday, April 12, Mr Mercer expressed disbelief over the basis for the attempted arrest.
“I have read Ntim Fordjour’s press statement read on behalf of the Minority Caucus in Parliament three times, and I am still at a loss as to what crime he has committed for the government to want to arrest him,” he stated.
He further warned against actions that could undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and freedoms.
“What kind of lawlessness is this? And it’s early days yet. I hope and pray that Mr Mahama’s promise of resetting is not one that resets Ghana into a military era,” Mercer cautioned, alluding to concerns about a potential regression in democratic governance under the new administration.
The former Sekondi MP’s comments add to the mounting criticisms of the NIB’s conduct, which many view as a dangerous encroachment on parliamentary privileges and civil liberties.
