A young man, who attempted to steal a cable at the ECG Substation at Adoato in the Ashanti Region, lost his life when the cable he was trying to steal electrocuted him.
The young man, identified as being in his late 30s, was electrocuted in the early hours of Saturday, 19th April, 2025, when he attempted to steal an earth wire (cable) at the ECG substation located at Adoato near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Greater Kumasi.
The incident, which resulted in an outage to a lot of customers within Greater Kumasi and beyond, is gradually becoming rampant in the Ashanti Region.
“Lately, vandalising of ECG transformers, cables, protective equipment and other installations needed for stable power supply has been on the rise in the Ashanti Region with recent acts at the same Adoato Substation, Adum Central Business District among others,” said Public relations officer (PRO) for ECG Ashanti West, Benjamin Obeng Antwi.
The ECG is cautioning the general public, especially those involved in this illegal activity, to desist from it as this affects the provision of a stable power supply in the Region and could also lead to the loss of life.
“We humbly appeal to the general public and all stakeholders to help us protect ECG installations by reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest police station, our Contact Center on 0302611611, the nearest ECG office, lodge a complaint on the ECG PowerApp or reach us on our social media handles @ECGghOfficial “.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has been contacted to help transport the deceased to the mortuary.
