Spain has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the “most serious, realistic and credible basis” for resolving the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking in Madrid after a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno, said the Spanish government recognises the deep importance of the Sahara issue to Morocco.
He noted that Spain supports Morocco’s credible efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable political solution.
Albares emphasised that the Moroccan autonomy initiative, first proposed in 2007, remains the most viable path forward.
He also reaffirmed Spain’s position within the wider international momentum, led by King Mohammed VI, backing Morocco’s sovereignty and the autonomy plan.
“This initiative is the most realistic and credible framework for resolving the dispute,” Albares said.
He stressed that this position aligns with the latest UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which welcomed Morocco’s efforts and called on all parties to build on the current progress.
Spain’s renewed endorsement sends a clear signal of its intent to support a final political settlement based on compromise and realism.
The country has positioned itself firmly within a growing chorus of international voices backing Morocco’s proposal as the only sustainable solution to the regional conflict.
