Newly elected president of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie has urged the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, to review its approach towards resource allocation to country’s sports federations.
Mr. Akpokavie who was speaking at the Ministry’s stakeholder engagement with federation heads, challenged the Ministry to reward excelling federations.
‘‘We know that the state cannot fund all sports. We recognize that.’’
‘‘Even in the advanced countries, it does not happen like that. Last year, UK Sports, which mainly funds sports federations in the UK, distributed resources to all the federations depending on past performances and programs for the next quadrennial.’’
‘‘What we want and we hope for, is that we have such a plan in place.’’
He further highlighted the contribution of boxing and athkletics, to the country’s Olympic past.
‘‘Anybody who follows sports in Ghana knows that there are twio disciplines that have constantly been at the Olympics. In fact, those two disciplines have won medals for us at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, more than any other sport; boxing and athletics.’’
Ghana’s athletes are expected to compete at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China from May 10.
