Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has disclosed that 71 individuals have been apprehended and more than 150 excavators, vehicles and firearms confiscated in the ongoing galamsey crackdown.
Addressing an audience of diplomats, journalists and civil‑society actors at a World Press Freedom Day event hosted by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra on Monday, 5 May, Mr Kwakye Ofosu reiterated the government’s unyielding commitment to eradicating illegal mining.
“As of the last brief that we got, 71 illegal miners have been arrested. Over 150 excavators, bulldozers, vehicles, and other weapons have been seized so far. Work is ongoing to ensure that L.I. 2462 no longer exists,” he stated.
He reminded attendees that on 20 March, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala, laid Legislative Instrument 2462 before Parliament.
Initially mooted for amendment, the regulation—which permits mining in forest reserves, is now set for outright repeal when the House reconvenes.
“We have abandoned plans to merely amend the regulation and will instead pursue its complete revocation,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu confirmed.
Looking ahead, he assured that existing mining laws would be reviewed and fortified as part of a broader strategy to eliminate galamsey.
The Minister emphasised that these measures form only one facet of a multi‑pronged approach designed to protect Ghana’s natural heritage and uphold the rule of law.
