A middle-aged woman and her two children were trapped inside their home for nearly three hours after a large fig tree fell and sealed off the frontage and entrance of their building at Wa, in the Upper West Region.
The massive tree, uprooted during a strong windstorm, completely blocked all exits, leaving the family stranded.
They were eventually rescued by a relative after sending distress calls to emergency services, friends, and other family members.
The Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Issah Nurah Danwanaa, who visited the scene, stated that the assembly is liaising with relevant agencies to remove aged and dangerous trees across the municipality to prevent similar incidents.
He noted that in the past month, the Wa Municipality has experienced severe windstorms that have uprooted several large trees, causing significant damage to property valued at thousands of Ghana cedis.
JoyNews’ Upper West Regional correspondent, Rafik Salam, was on-site during the rescue and captured the dramatic operation as it unfolded.
