The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Adentan constituency in the Greater Accra region, Akosua Asaa Manu, has made a passionate appeal to Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to intervene in what she describes as the unjust and humiliating treatment of Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
In an open letter issued on Tuesday, June 10, Akosua Manu urged the Vice President to help restore the dignity of the Madam Torkonoo, who she says is under siege following her suspension by President John Mahama.
Describing the ongoing investigations and actions against the Chief Justice as a coordinated effort to subject her to “the highest possible form of public ridicule,” Madam Manu drew attention to what she termed unprecedented attacks on Justice Torkornoo’s dignity.
“Any observer not exercising extreme restraint can only conclude that there is a deliberate and concerted effort not only to remove Madam Torkornoo but also to subject her to the highest possible form of public ridicule,” she wrote.
She evoked a shared history of Ghanaian women in leadership, praising the Vice President’s past remarks about opening doors for others.
Referring to the legacy of Justices Georgina Wood and Sophia Akuffo, she questioned: “Why, then, is she [Torkornoo] not merely being pushed out, but also being bruised and embarrassed on her way out?”
She concluded her appeal by urging Naana Jane to use her moral voice and leadership to stop what she called “a violation of rights” and “a miscarriage of justice.”
Madam Manu emphasised that the issue at stake transcends politics, stating, “This is not about shielding any official from accountability. It is about safeguarding the dignity of our institutions and the message we convey to every Ghanaian girl with dreams.”
