Ahmed Abdula is the new national cruiserweight champion after securing a unanimous win over Haruna Mohammed at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025.
Billed as one of the main fights on Sharaf Mahama’s Battle of the Beasts, Abdula produced a brilliant mix of power, endurance, and a clinic on how to deliver a million right hooks in a microsecond.
But it was not without work.
The first round delivered a lot of entertainment as both boxers tried to assert their dominance, but it was the challenger, Abdula, who landed more power punches.
Mohammed started the second round confidently but swung wildly on many occasions.
He was fortunate not to suffer any significant damage after Abdula connected a right hook to his jaw, forcing his mouth guard out.
As the rains poured down, the fans chanted the famous ‘‘Hwie, Hwie, hwie gu yenso’’.
The heavens obliged as it poured down in torrents.
Spurred by the energetic crowd, both fighters got into a wild swinging contest when the fight resumed.
But it was Abdul who connected a lethal right hook, sending the champion to the canvas.

It was a brilliant mix of power, accuracy, and speed.
It was a moment the legendary Azumah Nelson, who was in attendance, would have been proud of.
Buoyed by the moment, the challenger went for the kill, delivering a flurry of power punches to the admiration of the capacity crowd.
In the fourth round, Abdula toyed with the champion, punching him at will and dancing while at it.
Haruna tried to fight his way back but Abdula’s impressive footwork ensured he stepped out of harm’s way each time.
The penultimate round brought more humiliation for the champion who was by this time worn out after receiving so much punishment from Abdula.
Technical director of the Ghana Boxing Authority coach Ofori Asare was ringside as Haruna Mohammed’s coach and he was not the least impressed.
In a desperate bid to save his title, Mohammed threw the kitchen sink at his opponent.
His aggression paid off his stinging body shots opened up Abdula, allowing Mohammed to connect some powerful combinations.
Haruna Mohammed continued the onslaught in the seventh round but was nearly punished for taking one risk too many.
Abdula baited him only to deliver the perfect counterpunch when Mohammed let his guard down. That changed the tide as Abdul regained control of the bout.
The trend continued in the eighth round when Abdula pounded blood out of Mohammed’s nose and mercilessly followed up with a series of devastating left hooks.
A visibly distraught Haruna Mohammed hung on to dear life, fighting to prevent any further damage to his broken nose.
When all seemed lost in the ninth round, Haruna showed why he was the national champion, trading punches with his opponent despite his predicament. His endurance proved decisive as Abdula came off worse.
When he tried to clinch, Haruna smartly evaded him and delivered further punishment with a combination of body shots and right hooks.
When the tenth round started, Haruna’s mouth guard fell out for the umpteenth time. This time, coach Ofori Asare had had enough.
He ripped into his boxer in front of the capacity crowd.
Moments after the bout resumed, it fell out again. This time, the referee would not even allow any time out for the mouth guard to be washed. He called the boxer back and slipped it right back into his mouth.
It was a moment that summed up Haruna Mohammed’s title defense. He lost his coach’s support. He lost the crowd’s support.
And when the verdict came, the judges confirmed what over 5,000 spectators inside the arena, and the millions watching on DAZN and SuperSport had seen; a beatdown.
92-97, 92-97, and 92-97 all in favor of Ahmed Abdula.
The bout was one of the main fights on Amir Khan Promotions and Legacy Rise Sports ''Battle of the Beasts'' event at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025.
The event drew a capacity crowd that included Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, GFA president Kurt Okraku, the legendary Azumah Nelson, former World Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, Joshua Clottey,
