The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, on Monday, June 23, inaugurated the newly reconstituted governing board of the Volta River Authority (VRA), following their appointment by President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with the Council of State.
At a ceremony held in Accra, Mr Jinapor emphasised the crucial role of the board in guiding Ghana’s flagship power utility through the country’s accelerating energy transition agenda.
“This board has been entrusted with the task of improving VRA’s operations, optimising hydro and thermal assets, and firmly anchoring renewable initiatives within the Authority’s core mandate. VRA must work to be the lead institution when it comes to power generation,” he stated.
Mr Jinapor outlined several strategic priorities for the board, including:
1. Operational revitalisation
2. Accelerated green transition
3. Human capital development and local capacity building
4. Public and stakeholder engagement
He also reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the board’s mandate. “The Ministry will give you the needed support to deliver on your mandate. His Excellency the President has absolute confidence in the capabilities of the members of this board. As a board, you should lead VRA to champion the reforms in the power sector,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the board, the Chairman expressed gratitude to the President for the appointment and pledged to work diligently to restore the VRA’s fortunes.
“The fortunes of VRA have stagnated and dwindled over the years as a result of government policies. We will provide strategic guidance and direction to bring VRA back as the lead power generator in the sub-region and across Africa,” he said.
The members of the new governing board of the Volta River Authority are:
1. Ing. Jabesh Amissah-Arthur (Chairman)
2. Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo (Acting Chief Executive)
3. Dr Lawrence Ofosu Adjare
4. Collins Dauda
5. Fred Kwesi Agbenyo
6. Lawyer Wonder Victor Kutor
7. Awulai Attibrukusu III
8. Lawyer Peggy Addo
