The Ministry of Food and Agriculture, in partnership with the Presidential Directorate on Agriculture and Agribusiness (PIAA), has launched a landmark initiative to distribute three million premium coconut seedlings nationwide.
This initiative is to revolutionise Ghana’s agricultural sector and revitalise rural economies.
This ambitious programme is poised to create over 10,000 jobs, with a special focus on empowering youth and women in rural communities.
PIAA Director Peter Boamah Otukuno highlighted the importance of the project during a recent visit to nurseries preparing for the mass distribution.
He emphasised that the initiative is not just about expanding coconut cultivation but also about generating sustainable employment opportunities.
“We are committed to providing elite, high-value seedlings to both established commercial farmers and newcomers eager to enter the coconut farming sector. Every interested individual will have unfettered access to these seedlings,” Otukuno affirmed.
Sharing in the enthusiasm, Vice President of the Coconut Federation of Ghana, Kweku Boateng, praised the government’s decisive action, underlining its potential to transform rural livelihoods.
“The federation is excited about this visionary initiative by His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama. This move is long overdue, recognising coconuts’ evolution from a ‘sleeping giant’ to a global powerhouse,” Boateng said.
He added, “Our farmers stand ready, and the federation will provide strong technical support and ensure market access both essential for success. With key bottlenecks addressed, this project is set to be a game-changer for rural empowerment, particularly for youth and women.”
