A newborn baby abandoned in a public latrine in Kawmeduakrom, Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region, was miraculously rescued alive by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) late Sunday night.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, 20th July. The GNFS received a distress call at approximately 10:30 p.m., prompting an immediate dispatch of a rescue team.
Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO2) Peter Addai, speaking to Citi FM on Monday, 21st July, confirmed the successful rescue operation. He said the team, led by Station Officer II Appiah Kubi, arrived swiftly and executed a careful and coordinated rescue.
“Our team used an extension ladder to descend into the latrine and retrieved the baby by 11:31 p.m. It was a delicate operation, but thankfully, the child was found alive,” DO2 Addai said.
The rescued baby was immediately rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) in Obuasi, where medical personnel are currently providing care.
The incident has shocked the local community, raising concerns about child abandonment and the need for increased social support and protection for vulnerable individuals.
Local authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the abandonment.
