The Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Nurideen Muhammed Mumuni, has called for swift and decisive action by Ghana’s security agencies following the fatal shooting of two students at the Nalerigu Senior High School.
Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, the MP stressed the need for an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators.
“This incident at Nalerigu Senior High School demands a thorough investigation, and the security agencies must rise to the occasion and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” Mr Mumuni told Channel One TV on Sunday, 27 July.
The two students were reportedly shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on the night of Saturday, 26 July, in what many believe was a targeted attack on the school’s premises.
Although the motive for the attack is yet to be officially established, local sources suggest it may be linked to the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has triggered periodic unrest in the area.
The incident has sparked fear and anxiety among both students and residents in the Nalerigu community.
In an effort to restore calm, the government has imposed a temporary curfew from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., effective immediately.
Confirming the tragedy, the Headmaster of Nalerigu SHS, Mr Mohammed Tibila, stated that the victims were indeed attacked and killed within the school compound.
The bodies of the deceased students have since been released to their families for burial.
The killings have reignited calls for enhanced security in the conflict-prone area.
