The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says starting August 1, 2025, it will no longer issue aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ (DP) number plates at the country’s ports.
The move marks a full transition to a digital system with the exclusive issuance of DP sticker numbers at all entry ports, including Tema and Takoradi.
This follows a successful pilot of the sticker-based DP number system at the two major ports.
The DVLA says the change is part of its broader commitment to enhance the security, efficiency, and convenience of its services for vehicle importers and the general public.

To strengthen the safety of this new process, the DVLA is collaborating with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to ensure that every vehicle issued with a DP sticker is provided with insurance cover before leaving the port premises.
“This move is aimed at making DVLA services secure and efficient for our clients,” the statement said, urging the public to support the transition and work with both DVLA and SIC for a smooth rollout.
The Authority is confident that this digital reform will streamline port vehicle processing and align with its broader digitisation agenda.
