Ecuador has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as “the basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The position was stated on Friday in Rabat by Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, during a press briefing after talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
In line with the majority of UN member states, Ecuador also expressed support for Morocco’s efforts toward a realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution within the framework of the United Nations.
Ecuador officially withdrew its recognition of the so-called “SADR” on October 22, 2024, and severed all ties with the entity.
