Government-led climate initiatives may soon receive a significant boost, following a strategic move by the Ministry of Climate Change and Sustainability to partner with the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The collaboration is expected to unlock green financing for key national development priorities, including emission reduction, sustainable infrastructure, and the ambitious 24-hour economy agenda.
Speaking to JoyNews at a stakeholder engagement, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Alhaji Baba Seidu Issifu, indicated that discussions are underway to formalise Ghana’s partnership with the GCF as part of broader efforts to increase climate action.

The Minister also pointed out that the collaboration will support government interventions in critical areas such as green infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and climate-smart healthcare delivery.
The Director for the Africa Region at the Green Climate Fund, Catherine Candice Koffman, emphasised that while GCF is committed to supporting countries like Ghana, access to funding is dependent on how well projects are designed and aligned with national goals.

“We offer highly exciting and negotiable financing instruments, but it is essential that proposals are submitted through accredited entities and demonstrate strong technical quality,” she stated. “Ghana has the potential to unlock substantial climate finance if the submissions are strategic and align with national climate priorities”, she mentioned.
Koffman encouraged government institutions and implementing partners to enhance the structure of their project proposals, noting that stronger submissions will increase the likelihood of approval and rapid disbursement.
With the right partnerships and well-structured proposals, Ghana’s climate ambitions could soon receive the green light and the green funding to drive lasting impact in achieving Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement while propelling economic development through a just and inclusive green transition.
