The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have expressed profound sorrow following the tragic Ghana Air Force helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians on Wednesday, August 6.
In a statement signed by Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, Chair of VCTU-G, the institution extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire technical university community to the bereaved families, the government of Ghana, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and the people of Ghana.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you,” the release read. “We urge the entire Technical University community to observe this period with utmost solemnity and respect, in honour of our departed compatriots.”
“May their souls find peaceful repose in the bosom of eternity, and may their families be comforted by the nation's gratitude and the legacy of their comradeship and patriotism,” the statement stated.
The statement concluded with a unifying call to the nation.
“In this difficult period, let us come together as one people united in grief and committed to the Ghana they died serving. God be with us all.”
The crash, which occurred in Adansi in the Ashanti Region, has sent shockwaves across the nation, with tributes pouring in from all quarters.
The crash claimed the lives of key public servants, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The others were the NDC Vice-Chair Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, and former MP Samuel Aboagye.
The Ghana Air Force personnel crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Meanwhile, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has announced that all national flags are to fly at half-mast until further notice in honour of those who perished in the crash.
