Genser Energy has identified over 15 high-risk communities across Ghana, particularly in the Western and Ashanti regions, where illegal mining activities commonly known as galamsey are posing a serious threat to critical national infrastructure, particularly gas pipelines and power supply systems.
Speaking to the media, Mr Henry Abeiku Oppong, Vice President of Operations at Genser Energy, revealed that the company has recorded repeated incidents in these areas where galamsey operations have disrupted vital energy infrastructure.
“We’ve identified several high-risk areas,” Mr Oppong stated. “There are more than 15 communities where galamsey activity has either interrupted or completely cut our communication cables. These areas have now been placed under intensified surveillance and system monitoring.”
The Western Region has emerged as the epicentre of concern, with illegal miners operating dangerously close to Genser Energy’s pipelines.
These pipelines, which transport gas from the Western Region to the Ashanti Region, are critical for power generation and industrial supply.
“Galamsey operators are very active in the Western Region. The pipelines running from the Western Region to the Ashanti Region are under constant threat,” Mr Oppong said.
He expressed deep concern over the destructive impact of these operations, particularly in areas where the company’s gas pipelines run.
“Some of these activities are very harmful to the operations of our pipelines can become a real threat the communities,” he concluded.
